A step-by-step tutorial to make your own Felt Animal Garland 

This easy sewing tutorial shows you how to sew your own felt animal garland. Featuring a Giraffe, Frog, Zebra, Rhino, Elephant and Tiger these instructions will help you create a special piece of colourful decor, to be treasured for years to come. Sew Your Own Felt Animal Garland

You will need:
Good Quality Felt in orange, yellow, green, dark green, blue, turquoise, dark blue, brown, white, black, grey and purple
Threads in orange, yellow, green, dark green, blue, turquoise, dark blue, brown, white, black, grey and purple
1m Yellow ribbon or twine
Sewing needle
Large sewing needle, with a wide eye (wide enough to fit the twine or ribbon)
Pins
Scissors
PDF print out of pattern pieces or SVG file 
Cricut Maker or alternative felt cutting machine (optional)

 

Sewing the animals

Bouncy Little Frog

1. Stitch 2 white circles, as eyes, onto the top of the frog’s head by layering long stitches of black thread into a line. Stitch 2 tiny white nostrils on the face using layers of white thread.

2. Stitch the 2 head shapes together, directly on top of each other, ensuring to insert the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it begins to come together.

3. Lay one of the sets of frog’s legs underneath the head, and stitch this one layer onto the head. Stitch the 2 layers of legs together, directly on top of each other, inserting the stuffing as it comes together.

Noisy Elephant

1. Stitch 2 eyes onto the elephant’s face by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape.

2. Stitch the 2 head shapes together, directly on top of each other, ensuring to insert the ears at the sides of the head. Also, insert the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it begins to come together.

3. Lay one of the sets of elephant’s legs underneath the head, and stitch this one layer onto the head. Stitch the 2 layers of legs together, directly on top of each other, inserting the stuffing as it comes together.

Cute Rhino

1. Stitch the small purple triangle as a horn onto one of the rhino’s head shapes. Stitch 2 eyes onto the Rhino’s face by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape.

2. Stitch the 2 head shapes together, directly on top of each other, ensuring to insert the ears when reaching the top of the head. Also, insert the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it begins to come together.

3. Lay one of the sets of Rhino’s purple legs underneath the head, and stitch this one layer onto the head. Stitch the 2 layers of legs together, directly on top of each other, inserting the stuffing as it comes together.

Little Orange Tiger

1. Stitch the black stripes onto one of the tiger’s leg shapes.

2. Stitch the rounded black shape as a nose onto one of the tiger’s head shapes. Stitch 2 eyes onto the tiger’s face by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape.

3. Stitch the 2 head shapes together, directly on top of each other, ensuring to insert the ears when reaching the top of the head. Also, insert the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it begins to come together.

4. Lay one of the sets of tiger’s legs underneath the head, and stitch this one layer onto the head. Stitch the 2 layers of legs together, directly on top of each other, inserting the stuffing as it comes together.

Tall Giraffe

1. Stitch the brown spots onto one of the giraffe’s body shapes, randomly spaced.

2. Stitch 2 eyes onto the giraffe’s face by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape. Stitch the large brown shape onto the face as a nose.

3. Stitch the 2 body shapes together directly on top of each other, ensuring to insert the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it comes together.

4. Lay the head shapes over the top of the body, sandwiching it in between. Stitch the 2 head shapes together, ensuring to catch the body pieces as well as the ears and the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it begins to come together.

Stripy Zebra

1. Stitch the black stripes onto one of the zebra’s leg shapes.

2. Stitch the large black shape as a nose onto one of the zebra’s head shapes. Stitch 2 eyes onto the zebra’s face by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape.

3. Stitch the 2 head shapes together, directly on top of each other, ensuring to insert the ears when reaching the top of the head. Also, insert the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it begins to come together.

4. Lay one of the sets of zebra’s legs underneath the head, and stitch this one layer onto the head. Stitch the 2 layers of legs together, directly on top of each other, inserting the stuffing as it comes together.

Assembling the Garland

1. Thread the yellow and white ribbon onto the extra large needle. Carefully wiggle the ribbon and needle through the centre of each animal.

2. Once the animals are arranged in the order that you would like, space them out how you please.

3. If using ribbon, fold over the edge of the ribbon at one end, and stitch one button on top. Do the same at the other end.
