Welcome to this fun felt planets garland tutorial. The following instructions will help you create a special piece of cute decor to be treasured for years to come. Hang in your baby’s nursery or kids playroom for a super cute space themed decoration.
🌍 You will need:
Colourful felt and matching threads
Sewing needle
Large-eyed needle
1 metre ribbon or twine
Scissors
Pins
Toy stuffing
Cricut Maker or alternative felt cutting machine (optional)
PDF print out of pattern pieces or SVG file for cutting machine ⬇️
Begin by cutting the shapes in the relevant colours of felt. Each planet is then sewn separately, and all are threaded onto the twine at the end, so you can stitch each one at your leisure.
Sun
1. Lay the 2 sun shapes on top of each other, so that they are not directly lined up, but offset instead.
2. Stitch the 2 shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.
Mercury
Stitch the 2 grey Mercury shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.Venus
1. Stitch the red cloud shapes onto one of the orange Venus shapes.
2. Now stitch the 2 orange shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.
Earth
1. Stitch the green ‘land’ shapes onto one of the pale blue Earth shapes, following the image as a guide.
2. Now stitch the 2 blue shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.
Mars
1. Stitch the dark red shapes onto one of the bright red Mars shapes, following the image as a guide.
2. Now stitch the 2 red shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.
Jupiter
1. Stitch the red stripes, the brown stripe and the orange ‘eye’ onto one of the beige Jupiter shapes, following the image as a guide.
2. Now stitch the 2 beige shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.
Saturn
1. Stitch the orange stripes onto one of the pale yellow Saturn shapes, following the image as a guide.
2. Stitch the 2 Saturn shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.
3. Now lay the beige coloured ring shapes on top of each other, and then around the stuffed Saturn. Stitch these together and onto the planet at the same time, by using a running stitch and going through all of the layers. Follow the image of the finished garland as a guide.
Uranus
1. Stitch the 2 bright blue Uranus shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.
2. Now lay the pale blue coloured ring shapes on top of each other, and then around the stuffed Uranus. Stitch these together and onto the planet at the same time, by using a running stitch and going through all of the layers. Follow the image as a guide.
Neptune
1. Stitch the white stripes onto one of the dark blue Neptune shapes, following the image of the finished garland as a guide.
2. Stitch the 2 Neptune shapes together, using a simple running stitch and following the edges of the felt. Leave a small gap and insert the stuffing, before closing the gap.
Assembling the garland
1. Thread the ribbon or twine onto the extra large needle. Carefully wiggle the needle through the centre of each planet, arranging them by following the image of the finished garland.2. If using ribbon, finish by cutting on a slant to avoid fraying. Now fold over the ends to form a hanging loop. Secure using a stitch, and a button to decorate.
