Christmas Felt garlands

How to make your own felt Christmas garland

This easy sewing tutorial shows you how to make your own felt Christmas garland. Featuring a Santa, Rudolph Reindeer, Polar Bear, Gingerbread Man and Gingerbread House, this hanging decoration is a cute and fun way to bring your Holiday decor to life! Ideal to make yourself and give as gifts to family and friends or give to someone who loves to sew their own.
DIY felt Christmas garland
You will need:
Felt in white, red, brown, pale pink, fawn, black
Embroidery threads in matching colours 
1 Large red button
5 small heart-shaped buttons
Red ric-rac ribbon
Narrow red and white striped ribbon
Sewing needle
Large sewing needle, with very wide eye (wide enough to fit the ribbon)
Pins
Toy Stuffing 
Scissors
PDF print out of pattern or SVG file
Cricut Maker or alternative felt cutting machine (optional)

Santa

1. Stitch 2 eyes onto the Santa’s face by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape. Stitch the face onto one of the beard shapes. Stitch the 2 beard shapes together, directly on top of each other, inserting the toy stuffing in between the 2 pieces of felt as it begins to come together.

2. Stitch the 2 hat shapes together, inserting the stuffing in between. Lay the hat above the beard, and lay the white hat trim shapes on the top and underneath. Join together by stitching the hat trim shapes onto the hat and onto the beard.  Stitch the small white circle of felt onto the end of the hat.

3. Lay one of the sets of Santa’s red legs underneath the head, and stitch this one layer onto the head. Stitch the 2 layers of legs together, directly on top of each other, inserting the stuffing as it comes together.

Rudolph Reindeer

1. Stitch 2 layers of the Reindeer antlers directly on top of each other, and do the same with the other 2.

2. Stitch the large red button as a nose onto one of the Reindeer’s head shapes. Stitch 2 eyes onto the Reindeer’s face by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape.

3. Stitch the 2 head shapes together, directly on top of each other, ensuring to insert the antlers when reaching the top of the head. Also insert the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it begins to come together.

4. Lay one of the sets of Reindeer’s brown legs underneath the head, and stitch this one layer onto the head. Stitch the 2 layers of legs together, directly on top of each other, inserting the stuffing as it comes together.

Polar Bear

1. Stitch the black nose onto one layer of the Polar Bear head. Stitch 2 eyes onto the Polar Bear’s head by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape.

2. Stitch the 2 head shapes together, directly on top of each other, inserting the hanging ribbon at the top of the head. Also insert the toy stuffing in between the 2 layers of felt as it begins to come together.

3. Lay one of the sets of Polar Bear’s white legs underneath the head, and stitch this one layer onto the head. Stitch the 2 layers of legs together, directly on top of each other, inserting the stuffing as it comes together.

Gingerbread House

1. Stitch the 3 heart shaped buttons on to the front of one of the gingerbread house shapes.

2. Stitch the 2 gingerbread house shapes together, directly on top of each other, inserting the toy stuffing in between the 2 pieces of felt as it begins to come together.

3. Use white thread to stitch the white snow shaped felt on top of the house.

Gingerbread Man

1. Stitch the 2 heart shaped buttons on to the front of one of the gingerbread man shapes. Stitch 2 eyes onto the gingerbread man’s face by layering small stitches of black thread into a star shape.

2. Stitch the red ric-rac ribbon onto the gingerbread man's arms.

3. Stitch the 2 gingerbread men shapes together, directly on top of each other, inserting the toy stuffing in between the 2 pieces of felt as they begin to come together.

How to make your own gingerbread man

Garland Assembly

1. Thread the red and white ribbon onto the extra large needle. Carefully wiggle the needle and ribbon through the centre of each decoration.

2. Once the characters are arranged in the order that you would like, space them out how you please. Fold over the edge of the ribbon at one end, and stitch one white button on top. Do the same at the other end of the garland.
